Join us for Part Four of our four-part series with reflections and insights on the Live Well Arizona Incubator project. You’ll sit-in “live” as Penny Pestle shares the story of the newly re-branded Better Together Southern Arizona Coalition (referred to in this recording by its previous name – the Sustainable Families Coalition) and its experience with the Live Well Incubator.
In 2018, Vitalyst collaborated with the Arizona Partnership for Healthy Communities to establish the Live Well Arizona Incubator and take our support of place-based community health improvement to a new level: specifically, to help facilitate the creation of more cross-sector collaborations focused on community-informed and community-driven solutions.
In a nutshell, the idea was to identify early-stage cross-sector community health projects and provide technical assistance over time, using a series of full cohort face-to-face meetings, but also by providing a facilitator/coach/consultant for about 10 months to help each project develop its new collaborative, and also to produce a solid strategy and work plan going forward.
So how is it going so far? That’s what this fourth incubator-focused episode of the Vitalyst Spark podcast is all about.

In episode four of our minisode miniseries, we sit down with Haley Coles from ACLU from Sonoran Prevention Works (SPW). SPW received a $125,000 grant to support advocacy and education for syringe access programs – a proven harm reduction strategy in response to the opioid crisis and rising hepatitis-C and HIV infection rates.
Specifically, Sonoran Prevention Works is working to transform the response to the opioid crisis away from a perspective of pure criminalization to a framework focused on public health – and they are doing so by partnering with the University of Arizona College of Medicine Tucson, Creosote Partners and Shot in the Dark to destigmatize syringe access programs and understand the comprehensive needs of people who inject drugs. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office is also working with Sonoran Prevention Works to implement a needle stick prevention program and to educate law enforcement on injection drug use.
Listen today and learn what Haley means when she says “…it’s not about overdose. At the end of the day what kills people is stigma.”

In episode three of our minisode miniseries, we sit down with Anabel Maldonado from ACLU of Arizona’s Demand to Learn Initiative.
ACLU received $125,000 for Demand to Learn, funded in partnership by Vitalyst and the Arizona Community Foundation, to extend and invest in its partnerships with three key community groups: Black Mothers Forum, Morning Star Leaders, Inc. and Rising Youth Theatre.
Demand to Learn is working to transform disciplinary policies that disproportionately affect people of color. This community group investment is designed to support the capacity for community members to become peers and co-leaders in the movement to keep kids in schools, improve students’ physical and mental health and ultimately provide for greater economic stability.

E8: Meet Ndee Bikiyaa (2018 Innovation Grants Minisode Miniseries Episode 2)
Tuesday Sep 11, 2018
Tuesday Sep 11, 2018
In episode two of our minisode miniseries, we sit down with the White Mountain Apache tribe’s Clayton Harvey, Greenhouse Manager at Ndee Bikiyaa (The People’s Farm).
Ndee Bikiyaa received $125,000 for the Community Food Pipeline Project, funded in partnership by Vitalyst and the NARBHA Institute.
In just eight years, the farm has grown from a 10’ x 20’ plot to a six-acre community asset, and now Ndee Bikiyaa is poised to create transformational food policy change. Specifically, farm leadership is pursuing USDA regulation changes in order to produce, package, and sell traditionally prepared, hunted, and foraged foods that aren’t currently allowed – restoring the tribe’s rich cultural heritage and creating opportunities for health and well-being.
Starting with how the farm was (re)born in 2010, Clayton fills this episode with heartfelt stories not just of Ndee Bikiyaa, but of the true meaning behind the quest to honor and restore a rich, wise, and robust food culture.
